The number of outlets does not tell you how much load an extension lead can take. Check simultaneous use, its external condition and where it sits.
A desk may have a computer, monitor, lamp and several chargers. Before buying a larger extension lead, count what you will use at the same time and check where the wall socket is. Eight outlets do not mean you can connect eight appliances of any power rating.

Check the limit of the product you have
Look for the maximum power or load on that extension lead's label and in its manual. Also check the equipment you will connect and its own instructions. Do not use a generic online figure as the limit: two similar extension leads may have different specifications. If the label is unreadable or you are unsure about its condition, do not reuse it until this is clarified.
Do not plug one extension lead into another to gain more outlets. Manufacturer Brennenstuhl prohibits this in the Super-Solid range instructions consulted. It also states that these models must be used uncovered, in dry spaces and with the plug accessible. Always follow the conditions for the specific model, even though that manual is used here as a reference.
| Before plugging in | What to decide |
|---|---|
| Equipment that will run at the same time | Make a list including accessories and anything you add occasionally. |
| Heater or another high-power appliance | Check its manual: it may require a direct connection to a suitable socket. Do not add it to the desk extension lead for convenience. |
| Cable that does not reach the wall | Reconsider the position or ask about a suitable solution; do not link adapters together to cover the distance. |
| Extension lead covered by papers or wedged among fabrics | Find a position that allows the ventilation it needs and access to the plug. |
Look at the outside without dismantling anything
Do not use an extension lead with burnt plastic, cracks, damaged cables or outlets that do not grip plugs properly. Do not try to secure connections with tape or repair it internally. If you notice smoke or fire, move away and call 112. Do not touch a hot or damaged connector to check its condition.
Check before putting the equipment into use. If the problem is in the wall socket, a new extension lead will not solve it. Avoid using that point and request an inspection. Surge protection does not make a damaged socket a suitable connection either.
When you regularly run short of sockets
Draw where you need to connect each device and where the furniture sits. Mark existing sockets by their visible position, without removing fittings. If you have to swap plugs, run cables across walkways or add adapters every day, this list will help an electrical installation company assess a new layout.
Choosing an extension lead and extending the installation are different decisions. You can define the position and use you need; the company must check the installation and propose how to modify it. You do not need to calculate cable cross-sections or choose protective devices to request that assessment.
